Junior Nduka hails NPFL’s Prostar ball, urges earlier introduction
Remo Stars captain Junior Nduka has commended the Nigeria Professional Football League NPFL for introducing the Prostar Evolution Ball as the official match ball for the season but suggested that it should have been implemented earlier to allow players time to adjust.
Nduka acknowledged the ball's quality and uniqueness, expressing his pride in the league using an indigenous product. However, he pointed out that many players have struggled to adapt to its variations due to its late introduction.
He also highlighted how different playing surfaces across Nigeria affect the ball’s movement, making adaptation difficult for players. Comparing stadiums such as Ikenne and Jos, Nduka explained that natural grass and astro turf impact ball control differently, requiring players to study these variations.
Despite his concerns, Nduka believes the Prostar Evolution Ball is a positive innovation that aligns with the league’s growth. With Remo Stars currently leading the NPFL and aiming for their first league title, he remains optimistic about the competition’s progress.
Editorial
The introduction of the Prostar Evolution Ball in the NPFL is a commendable step toward professionalism in Nigerian football. Using an official, locally produced match ball ensures consistency and identity in the league. However, Junior Nduka’s concerns about its timing and impact on gameplay raise valid points that should not be ignored.
Footballers rely heavily on muscle memory, precision, and familiarity with their equipment. When a new ball is introduced without adequate preparation, players face challenges in controlling, passing, and shooting. The varying bounce and weight across different surfaces only add to the complexity, making it crucial that future changes be introduced with sufficient time for adaptation.
