Osimhen Scores Again as Galatasaray Fall to Ajax in Europa League
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen found the net in Galatasaray’s 2-1 loss to Ajax during their UEFA Europa League clash. His stoppage time goal marked the fourth consecutive Europa League match in which the Napoli loanee has scored, bringing his season tally to 17 goals across all competitions, including five in Europe.
Ajax took control early, with Bertrand Traoré opening the scoring in the 23rd minute and Kian Fitz-Jim doubling the lead in the 58th minute following a counterattack. Despite multiple chances, Osimhen struggled to find the back of the net until the 94th minute, when he pounced on a rebound and smashed a shot past the Ajax goalkeeper.
Although his late effort offered some consolation, it wasn’t enough to overturn the deficit, as Galatasaray’s hopes of a comeback fell short.
Editorial
Victor Osimhen’s fourth consecutive goal in the Europa League once again highlighted his incredible form. Still, Galatasaray’s 2-1 loss to Ajax also emphasized that the Nigerian striker isn’t getting enough support. While his instincts and ability to score under pressure are undeniable, his efforts are often left unrewarded due to lapses in team performance.
Osimhen’s goal scoring consistency this season 17 goals and counting demonstrates his status as one of Europe’s elite forwards. His ability to create something out of nothing was on full display with his stoppage time goal, but Galatasaray cannot rely solely on his brilliance. The team needs to offer more cohesive play, especially in midfield and defence, to prevent early deficits like the one against Ajax.
The missed chances, particularly the headers in the 18th and 44th minutes, show that even prolific strikers have off days. However, that doesn’t excuse Galatasaray’s lack of urgency in the first half.
