Tunisia's Houij Praises Super Falcons Ahead of WAFCON 2024 Opener
Tunisia striker Mariem Houij has acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by Nigeria's Super Falcons ahead of their Group B clash at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco. The match is set to take place on Sunday, July 6, 2025, in Casablanca.
Houij, who scored the fastest goal in WAFCON history a 17-second strike against Togo in 2022 highlighted Nigeria's rich tournament history and formidable squad. "Nigeria is the most decorated team in the WAFCON," Houij remarked. "In the last edition, they were eliminated in the semi-finals by the host nation, Morocco."
Despite the daunting task, Houij expressed confidence in her team's preparation and potential. "The ideal scenario would be reaching the final. We have a strong, long-standing group that has been reinforced with new players due to the postponement of the 2024 edition to 2025," she added.
Tunisia, under the guidance of coach Kamel Saada, have been preparing intensively for the tournament. Saada acknowledged the strength of their group, stating, "It's a tough group. Everyone knows the quality of Nigeria. Algeria is improving fast. Botswana too. We’re not underestimating anyone."
The Super Falcons, aiming for a record-extending 10th continental title, will also face Botswana and Algeria in the group stage. The tournament runs from July 5 to July 26, 2025, with all group matches scheduled in Casablanca.
